The Annandale Way officially opened in September 2009 and is a wonderful new walk which follows the magnificent River Annan on its way from the sea to its source.

This 55 mile (88.5 km) walk is brimming with wildlife and culture offering you glimpses into the history and hidden secrets of this quiet and tranquil area of Scotland, parts of which have remained undisturbed for centuries.

This is a truly enjoyable walk in this beautiful ancient border region of Scotland.


Suggested Itinerary (5 days walking/6 overnight stays)

Day 1 Arrive Annan With good public transport links, arrive into the historic Royal Burgh of Annan with its fine red sandstone buildings.
Day 2 Newbiebarns via Annan to Hoddom Bridge (10.5 miles/17km) Starting from the sea and making your way along the banks of the Annan through beautiful countryside to end up at the gates of the impressive Hoddom Castle.
Day 3 Hoddom Bridge to Lochmaben (14 miles/22.5 km) A fine days walk with an inspiring viewpoint from Joe Graham's Monument where you are rewarded with the whole jigsaw of Annandale spreading below you.
Day 4 Lochmaben to St Ann's (10 miles/16 km) Departing the picturesque village of Lochmaben to walk through pastureland and plantations on your way to St Ann's.
Day 5 St Ann's to Moffat (7 miles/11.25 km) Deer and wildlife abound on this stage as you meet up with the 'Crooked Road' then through Roman countryside to Moffat.
Day 6 The Devil's Beef Tub, Moffat (13.5 miles/21.75 km) The circumnavigation of the Devil's Beef Tub involves steep climbs but this excellent days walking is worth it for the spectacular views as you reach the end of the Way and the source of the River Annan.
Day 7 Depart Moffat Depart the market town of Moffat, home to the famous 'Moffat Toffee.'

Cost of Package : £335.00 pp (based on two persons sharing)

  • Six overnight stays in selected quality b&bs/guest houses/small hotels with en-suite facilities

Not Included:

  • Evening meals, packed lunches and drinks (available at all stages)
  • Transport to Annan/from Moffat
  • Travel Insurance (we recommend that you arrange your own cover)

Notes :

  • Additional overnight stays can be arranged at a cost of £40.00 pp per night.
  • Discounts available for groups of 4 or more. Please ask at time of booking.
  • This route does not support solo walkers due to the high cost of baggage transfer. However, if you can arrange to walk at the same time/stay at the same destinations as another tour, then it might be feasible. Please contact us for further details.
