7 Days Walking/8 Overnights

GREAT GLEN WAY: 7 DAYS WALKING/8 OVERNIGHT STAYS

79 Miles/127 Km

All walking tours should only be tackled if you are a fit walker with well worn in boots and this itinerary allows you a more leisurely walk with your longest day totalling 15 miles/24 km. Along with our six day tour, this is one of our most popular choices.  You will be pleased to see the welcoming sight of Inverness Castle perched on the hill as you reach your final destination in the fabulous Highland capital of Inverness.

Day 1

Travel to Fort William

With the option of the bus or train, you arrive into the Highland town of Fort William ready to start your challenge!

Day 2

Fort William to Gairlochy(10.5 miles/17 km)

An easy start past Old Inverlochy Castle, up beside Neptune’s Staircase and along the Caledonian Canal. On arrival at Gairlochy Locks you have the option of walking to your accommodation in Spean Bridge via the “cannae no visit” Commando Memorial or a transfer is provided. Your hosts will be pleased to transfer you back to Gairlochy the next morning to continue your walk.

Day 3

Gairlochy to South Laggan(13 miles/21 km)

Today you will walk parallel to the beautiful Loch Lochy mainly along picturesque forest tracks. Once you reach Laggan Locks you will be rewarded with a fantastic view up the length of Loch Lochy before you head to your accommodation.

Day 4

South Laggan to Fort Augustus(12 miles/19.5 km)

A lovely start along the side of the beautiful Loch Oich before reaching Aberchalder Swing Bridge and the old Bridge of Oich. An easy section along the Caledonian Canal takes you to the picturesque village of Fort Augustus.

Day 5

Fort Augustus to Invermoriston(9.5 miles/15 km)

On this short walking day, it is recommended that you leave later and use the morning to explore Fort Augustus and perhaps take a boat trip out onto the loch.  Upon departing the village, you start the first real climb on the Way, however, you are rewarded with breathtaking views across Loch Ness on your way to Invermoriston.

Day 6

Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit(14 miles/22.5 km)

A steep climb out of the village through the forest with the chance of spotting some red squirrel.  More dramatic views are in store as you make your way to the crafting community of Grotaig. A quiet minor road is followed high above Loch Ness before you descend into the bustling village of Drumnadrochit.

Day 7

Drumnadrochit to Blackfold(12.5 miles/20 km)

Another steep climb awaits you not far out of Drumnadrochit but the views of Loch Ness are worth it!  You soon pass by the hill crafting community of Abriachan and then the tiny settlement of Blackfold.

Day 8

Blackfold to Inverness(7.5 miles/12 km)

An enchanting walk through old Caledonian Pine forest leads you to the outskirts of Inverness. A steep descent takes you onto the Caledonian Canal with a superb finish along Ness Islands and on to the imposing figure of Inverness Castle for the finish. A short day allows you an afternoon to explore the city of Inverness.

Extra Nights/Rest Days : many people take an extra night at the stage of Fort William to climb Ben Nevis, Scotland’s highest mountain. Alternatively, Drumnadrochit offers a range of sightseeing activities from the famous Urquhart Castle to the Loch Ness Exhibition Centre.  The capital city of Inverness offers a host of opportunities from a visit to Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, the famous Culloden Battlefield or a boat trip to watch dolphins on the Moray Firth!
