6 Days Walking/7 Overnights

79 miles (127 km)

We consider it necessary for you to be a fit and experienced walker for this six day walk. If you have a reasonable level of fitness and well worn in boots then this is certainly achievable. The route is sign posted and we will supply you with the Rob Roy Way Rucksack Guide.

Day 1

Travel to Drymen

With good public transport links, you arrive into the picturesque village of Drymen ready to start your challenge!

Day 2

Drymen to Aberfoyle(10 miles/16 km)

Starting at Drymen Square, you can choose to take part of the West Highland Way for a few miles to save road walking before rejoining the Rob Roy Way. Your walk then takes you through the lovely Loch Ard Forest and past the interesting Loch Katrine Water Scheme before heading into the village of Aberfoyle.

Day 3

Aberfoyle to Strathyre(19 miles/30 km)

After ascending out of Aberfoyle, as you gain height you soon reach open moorland as the path meanders over the Menteith Hills. On your journey you will pass the lovely Lochan Allt a’Chip Dhuibh. A stretch of forestry follows on your descent towards the village of Callander known as “The Gateway to the Highlands.” You then walk along a dismantled railway track bed following Cycle Route 7 all the way to Strathyre through fantastic woodlands. You will gain lovely views of Loch Lubnaig to your right.

Day 4

Strathyre to Killin(12 miles/19 km)

As you depart Strathyre you will ascend through the forest before dipping back down to pass the famous Kingshouse Hotel and Rob Roy Bar. Thereafter, you soon rejoin Cycle Route 7 and the path starts to climb affording you fine views down to Lochearnhead below.  You then cross the disused Glen Ogle viaduct which leads to little Lochan Lairig Cheile. Continue to follow the cycle route all of the way into Killin to reach the spectacular Falls of Dochart.

Day 5

Killin to Ardtalnaig(12 miles/19 km)

A long steady ascent takes you to a high mast followed by a long descent to Ardeonaig. You then have four miles of minor road walking to reach the stage of Ardtalnaig. This is the rendezvous for your transfer back to Killin for your second overnight stay.

Day 6

Ardtalnaig to Aberfeldy(15 miles/24 km)

After having been transferred back to Ardtalnaig, your walk starts with a stretch of minor road walking before the trail heads off uphill at Acharn. You have the chance here to view the spectacular Falls of Acharn before making your way along a path known as the Queens Drive. The rest of the day consists mainly of forest and your final stretch is rewarded by meeting up with the splendid woodland gorge of the Birks (Falls) of Aberfeldy before descending down into the village.

Day 7

Aberfeldy to Pitlochry(11 miles/18 km)

The first part of today’s walk is an enjoyable stroll alongside the River Tay as you make your way to Grandtully. You then head off into the forest for an equally enjoyable walk on the public footpath which takes you down into the tourist town of Pitlochry, famous for its theatre, dam and fish ladder. Pitlochry is also home to the Blair Athol Distillery, well worth a visit.

Extra Nights/Rest Days : many people take an extra night at the stage of Pitlochry to either visit Pitlochry’s Festival Theatre, visit Erdradour, Scotland’s smallest distillery and/or visit the Pitlochry dam and fish ladder.
