WALKING IN SCOTLAND |
|
Breathtaking! Is the best word to describe this beautiful country,
from our lochs and glens to stunning mountain scenery. From salmon and
deer to soaring eagles, the massacre of Glen Coe to world famous
Scots. There is so much to enjoy and see and how better to explore
this land than by walking on the many Long Distance Paths that
Scotland has to offer. |

The most famous trail in Scotland is the
West Highland Way. This walk
was the country’s first official long distance route, opened in
October 1980 and 27 years later is still one of the most famous trails
in the world. The Way takes you from Milngavie to Fort William, a
distance of 95 miles (152 km) from the outskirts of Scotland’s largest
city to the foot of its highest mountain, following the shores of its
largest freshwater loch. It passes from the Lowlands, across the
Highland Boundary Fault and on into the Scottish Highlands.

A natural extension of the West Highland Way is the
Great Glen Way
and, as
the name suggests, it follows the course of the largest and most
spectacular glen in Scotland. This geological fault line is millions
of years old and divides the Northern and Southern Highlands. The
Caledonian Canal, designed by Thomas Telford and first opened in 1822,
runs along the length of the Great Glen and consists of three lochs,
Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness, as well as rivers and man-made
water ways. The 73 mile (117 km) trail was officially opened in April
2003 and begins in Fort William, leading north and eastwards through
spectacular scenery, before finishing in the capital of the Highlands,
Inverness, Scotland's fastest growing city. |

you along the Way |
